Proposition for Revision of Guidelines for the Seismic Installation of Suspended Ceilings
2024-03-15
Suspended ceilings are easily damaged and fall down during earthquakes. While it is highly suspended such as in a gymnasium, it is very likely to injure the users below. In response to the increasing demand for the improvement of the seismic performance of suspended ceilings, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has conducted a series of ceiling system tests since 2015. Furthermore, NCREE started to revise Appendix B of the building code "guidelines for the seismic installation of suspended ceilings" in 2021. In 2022, NCREE, Nagoya University, and NCKU completed an international cooperation experiment on a long-stroke high-speed shaking table in NCREE Tainan Laboratory to verify the applicability of the seismic guidelines. From the experiment results, it can be known that the seismic performance of the ceiling with elevation difference is not satisfactory with domestic customary installation practice. Meanwhile, the floating ceiling is extremely fragile with poor seismic performance. The experiment results serve as the basis for the adjustment of the planning for the 2023 experiment in E-Defense.
