The post-tensioned seismic building systems have the advantages of re-centering after the effects of earthquake ground accelerations and thereby eliminating permanent drift and reducing the possibility of demolishing after an earthquake. However, researches on this structural system are rather limited especially in Taiwan. An integrated project is therefore launched inviting researchers and engineers to systematically investigate this structural system. Also, international collaborative projects are expected to further study the structural system. It is hoped that through the collaboration between university professors, graduate students and professionals, the advancement of knowledge and closer ties among these participants can be facilitated.
This proceeding contains the summaries for the US-Taiwan Workshop on Self-Centering Structural Systems held at NCREE, June 6-7, 2005. A total of 20 papers have been collected together, covering a wide spectrum of research work on self-centering structural systems in the US and Taiwan, e.g. the seismic behavior of post-tensioned beam-to-column connections, column-to-base connections, frame systems, damage assessment of self-centering frame systems as well as the analytical and testing technology for structure experiments, etc.. In addition, a session of panel discussion has been scheduled before the end of the workshop to formulate bilateral collaborations and future perspectives of both sides on this topic.
The organizers of the workshop would like to thank all participants from the US and Taiwan for their dedicated effort and support. The financial contributions and supports from National Science Council of Taiwan and NCREE are gratefully acknowledged.
